Apple Realigns Strategy, Cuts Jobs in Vision Pro and Siri Teams Amid AI and Smart Glasses Push

This strategic realignment underscores Apple's commitment to staying competitive in the rapidly evolving AI landscape and addressing the challenges faced by its initial Vision Pro launch. By reallocating resources and talent, Apple aims to accelerate the development of a more robust, AI-powered Siri and focus on smart glasses with broader market appeal. This shift could significantly impact Apple's future product roadmap and its position in the consumer technology market.

Apple Realigns Strategy, Cuts Jobs in Vision Pro and Siri Teams Amid AI and Smart Glasses Push

Apple is reportedly cutting over 200 jobs across its Vision Pro, Siri, and Intelligent Systems Experience teams as it pivots towards artificial intelligence and future smart glasses. The restructuring impacts approximately 100 roles within the Vision Pro division, particularly those focused on gaming and immersive video, and another 100 across Siri and AI-driven software groups. This move reflects a strategic shift to re-architect Siri with enhanced AI capabilities and prioritize the development of more mass-market friendly smart glasses.

Apple's Strategic Pivot Towards AI and Smart Glasses

Apple is undergoing a significant strategic realignment, reportedly cutting over 200 jobs across its Vision Pro, Siri, and Intelligent Systems Experience teams. This move signals a clear shift in the company's priorities, with a heightened focus on artificial intelligence and the development of future smart glasses. The job cuts are part of an effort to "evolve our business to deliver the best experiences for our users," according to an Apple spokesperson.

Approximately 100 positions are being eliminated from the Vision Pro organization, while another 100 are being cut from the Siri and software teams. Despite these reductions, Apple has assured employees that the Vision Pro hardware line and its visionOS operating system remain active projects. However, near-term hardware priorities appear to be shifting towards developing smart glasses that do not require complex 3D gaming or immersive media capabilities.

Restructuring the Vision Pro Initiative

The job cuts within the Vision Pro division primarily impact teams focused on gaming and immersive video production. Apple is reportedly "largely shutting down" its internal Vision Pro gaming team and significantly downsizing its dedicated immersive video production unit. This tactical shift comes as the Vision Pro spatial computer has faced challenges in achieving widespread consumer adoption, partly due to its premium price point of $3,699 and physical weight.

Producing 3D immersive video content has proven to be financially challenging, with single episodes costing millions of dollars and requiring multiple production crews. While Apple plans to continue releasing a limited selection of first-party immersive videos, it intends to rely more heavily on third-party creators to build out the ecosystem. The company is still considering an updated Vision Pro model for potential release as early as late 2028.

Siri's AI-Driven Overhaul

The restructuring within the Siri and Intelligent Systems Experience divisions is directly linked to Apple's efforts to develop an updated, AI-enhanced version of its virtual assistant. This next-generation assistant is being built on a completely revised technical architecture, which necessitates specialized skill sets and has prompted software teams to realign to accelerate development.

The changes to the Intelligent Systems Experience team reflect an effort to reorganize work on AI-powered capabilities. As more groups within Apple integrate AI functions into apps, features, and services, the company is realigning teams to match these priorities and speed up development. New positions will be created to support the upcoming AI-infused version of Siri and to enhance the Intelligent Systems Experience team.
