Apple Unleashes Siri AI Public Beta, Promising a Smarter, More Personal Assistant

Apple has launched the public beta for iOS 27, featuring a significantly overhauled Siri AI. This new iteration, powered by Apple Intelligence, offers conversational capabilities, on-screen content understanding, and deep integration with personal data across Apple's ecosystem. The update also brings system-wide performance enhancements and advanced AI tools to other core applications.

Siri's Grand AI Transformation Arrives

After years of anticipation and a previous delay, Apple has finally unveiled a profoundly more capable and personal assistant with the release of the iOS 27 public beta, featuring the all-new Siri AI. This reimagined Siri is built around Apple's next-generation Apple Intelligence system, enabling it to hold ongoing conversations, understand on-screen content, and take actions within apps. Unlike its predecessor, Siri AI can now search your personal information across apps like Mail, Messages, Notes, Reminders, and Calendar to provide more relevant and detailed responses.

The new Siri AI is designed to be more conversational, akin to modern AI chatbots like ChatGPT or Claude, supporting natural back-and-forth dialogue. Responses from Siri AI now emerge from the Dynamic Island, and users can pull down on a response to open a full conversation. A dedicated Siri app has also been introduced, keeping your conversation history in one place and syncing it privately through iCloud.

Deep Personal Context and On-Device Processing

One of the most significant advancements in Siri AI is its ability to leverage personal context understanding, drawing on information from your messages, emails, photos, and more to provide tailored assistance. For instance, users can ask Siri to find a restaurant recommendation from a friend's message or surface a hotel confirmation number from an old email. This deep integration extends to third-party apps when developers integrate with Spotlight. The revamped Siri AI runs on-device at approximately 30 tokens per second, ensuring real-time conversational responses without needing to ping a cloud server, and raising the bar for privacy-focused applications. This on-device processing is a key differentiator, creating opportunities for developers to build smarter, privacy-centric applications, particularly in areas like crypto wallets and DeFi platforms.

Siri AI also boasts enhanced Visual Intelligence capabilities, integrated directly into the Camera app with a new Siri mode. This allows users to point their camera at objects and ask Siri for information or to take action, such as converting a membership barcode into a Wallet pass. Furthermore, the system-wide Write with Siri feature allows the AI to generate text from scratch, offer feedback on writing, and even adjust tone or wording by analyzing a user's communication style.

Broader System Enhancements and Accessibility

The iOS 27 public beta extends its AI-powered improvements beyond Siri, touching nearly every corner of the iPhone's operating system. Safari can now automatically organize tabs by topic, group bookmarks, and Reading List items, and even create specialized extensions from natural-language descriptions. The Photos app receives three powerful editing tools: Clean Up for removing distractions, Extend for generating content beyond existing frames, and Spatial Reframing for adjusting composition.

Beyond AI, iOS 27 brings significant performance upgrades across the board, with apps launching up to 30% faster, newly captured pictures appearing in the Photos app up to 70% faster, and AirDrop transfers completing up to 80% faster. The update also includes a redesigned Screen Time experience, Liquid Glass refinements, and dozens of quality-of-life changes. While many of these advanced Apple Intelligence features require an iPhone 15 Pro or later, the iOS 27 public beta is available for a wider range of devices, with the full release expected in the fall alongside new iPhones.
