The global memory chip shortage, a crisis dubbed "RAMmageddon" or the "RAMpocalypse," has intensified, with the explosive growth of the artificial intelligence (AI) industry identified as the primary catalyst. Semiconductor manufacturers are strategically reallocating their production capacity towards high-margin memory chips specifically designed for AI data centers, creating a severe scarcity of integrated circuits intended for consumer and enterprise markets. This shift has led to a structural imbalance where demand for AI-ready data center capacity is projected to grow approximately 33% annually through 2030, consuming roughly 70% of total data center capacity by the decade's end.
The impact is evident in the dramatic price increases for memory components. DRAM prices surged an estimated 90-95% quarter-over-quarter in Q1 2026, with a projected 58-63% increase in Q2 2026. Similarly, SSD prices were expected to rise sharply in early 2026, with forecasts pointing to roughly 53-58% quarter-over-quarter increases in Q1. This prioritization of AI memory has left consumer electronics, including laptops and smartphones, facing higher costs and limited availability.
MacBook Air Hit Hard by Supply Constraints
Apple's popular MacBook Air is now directly experiencing the repercussions of the global memory shortage, with shipping delays extending into late August and early September for many configurations. This is an unusual situation for a current-generation MacBook Air, which was refreshed with the M5 chip in March. Retail store sources have indicated that the lack of on-hand availability for the MacBook Air is unprecedented in recent memory.
The delays are particularly acute for models equipped with 16GB RAM and 512GB SSD, which are in high consumer demand, with offline store inventories effectively depleted. Apple has even updated its internal marketing materials to warn customers that the MacBook Air is "subject to availability" and has begun steering education buyers toward the more expensive entry-level 14-inch MacBook Pro as an alternative. This shift also appears to be a strategy to clear the way for an anticipated M6 chip refresh for the MacBook Pro later this fall.
Broader Industry Impact and Looming Price Hikes
The memory crisis extends beyond Apple, affecting the entire consumer electronics industry and even industrial supply chains. PC manufacturers like Lenovo, Dell, HP, Acer, and ASUS have warned of 15-20% PC price increases for 2026 due to DRAM and NAND shortages, with some reports suggesting increases could climb up to 30% as component shortages worsen. Smaller electronics companies are also struggling to find suppliers for components such as NAND flash.
The Framework Laptop 13 Pro, a device praised for its repairability and premium features, has also been significantly impacted by the RAM crisis. The cost of LPCAMM2 RAM, a lower-power, compact memory module used in the Laptop 13 Pro, has more than doubled, forcing Framework to raise prices on pre-built models by as much as $800 and even downgrade RAM amounts on some existing orders. Micron Technology CEO Sanjay Mehrotra also anticipates the shortage to last through 2027, with gradual improvements by 2028. This prolonged crunch is attributed to the time-consuming and costly nature of building new DRAM fabrication plants, which can cost $15-20 billion.
In an effort to alleviate supply issues, Apple has proposed sourcing memory chips from Chinese suppliers like ChangXin Memory Technologies (CXMT) for devices sold within China. This move aims to free up inventory from manufacturers such as Samsung and Micron for products shipped to other markets, though it has already drawn political scrutiny from a bipartisan group of U.S. senators over national security concerns.
