The state of Nevada has taken a significant step towards a future dominated by autonomous vehicles, granting permits to industry giants Tesla, Uber, and Waymo for commercial robotaxi operations in Clark County, encompassing the bustling city of Las Vegas. While the overall number of approved vehicles is substantial, the immediate rollout will be more measured. The initial permit, approved on July 27, was significantly scaled down, limiting operations to 10 vehicles within a designated geofenced area on the Las Vegas Strip, with a maximum speed of 45 mph, and prohibiting airport pickups without further approval.

Tesla is not the first autonomous vehicle company to operate in Nevada. Amazon-owned Zoox has been running under a Nevada autonomous vehicle permit since last year, gradually scaling its operations to approximately 100 vehicles and logging around 350,000 rides on the Strip. Zoox began charging for its services in August, two weeks before Tesla's initial permit approval. This established precedent likely provided the Nevada Transportation Authority (NTA) with a template for scaling permits based on proven safety records.
While Tesla's permit now allows for a larger fleet, its approach to commercializing autonomous driving differs from Waymo's.
