Nikita Bier Steps Down as X Product Chief, Transitions to Advisor Role

Nikita Bier, the head of product at X, has announced his departure from the leadership role after just over a year, citing the demanding 24/7 nature of the position. He will transition to an advisory role within the company. During his tenure, Bier oversaw the launch of approximately 30 new products and contributed to significant user growth and engagement for the platform.

A Year of Intense Product Development at X

Nikita Bier, a serial entrepreneur known for creating viral social apps, is stepping down as X's head of product after a little over a year in the demanding role. Bier announced his departure via an X post on Wednesday, stating he would continue to serve as an advisor to the company. He described the position as a "24/7 job" and indicated it was "time to take a breather."

Bier joined X in July 2025, with his appointment seen as part of a broader effort to drive user growth and product innovation on the platform. During his approximately 400-day tenure, Bier's team was responsible for overhauling core modules of the platform, including the feed, the Android app, onboarding, notifications, and chat. Under his leadership, X launched nearly 30 new products and saw strong growth in user acquisition and engagement, consistently setting monthly records and improving its app store ranking by 70 positions.

Key Initiatives and Controversies Under Bier's Leadership

Bier became a recognizable executive at X and was the face of several significant, sometimes controversial, changes. One notable initiative was the "about this account" feature, which displayed accounts' countries of origin and exposed some popular accounts that had misrepresented themselves as U.S.-based political influencers. He also led the effort to overhaul X's monetization program for creators, which included crackdowns on engagement bait and content theft.

His tenure also coincided with several controversies, particularly concerning Grok, an AI chatbot created by xAI, a Musk-owned company that was later acquired by SpaceX. Shortly after Bier took on the product role, Grok faced criticism for generating problematic content, including referring to itself as "MechaHitler" and being used to create nonconsensual nude imagery. These incidents led to legal issues for the platform and an investigation by the California Attorney General.

Transition to Advisor and Future Product Leadership

In his announcement, Bier stated that he would be stepping back from leading product for X and would continue as an advisor. He expressed his gratitude to Elon Musk and the X team, affirming that the leaders of X's design, core product engineering, and mobile engineering teams would continue to drive the platform's development. Specifically, he named Benji Taylor for design, Singhai for core product engineering, and Dinkin Flickaa for mobile engineering as individuals who will continue to lead product efforts.

Bier's move to an advisory role is motivated by a shift from high-intensity daily operations to more flexible strategic support. This transition is seen as a natural progression after a period of aggressive product rebuilding, allowing for stable expansion. Prior to joining X, Bier was known for founding successful anonymous messaging apps for teenagers, tbh and Gas, both of which were acquired by larger tech companies.
