The invisible SynthID watermark and C2PA metadata will continue to be embedded in all AI-generated files. These invisible markers allow for behind-the-scenes verification of content origin, ensuring that automated systems and tools like Gemini or Google Search can still detect if a piece of media was AI-generated.

This dual approach provides creators with clean, unbranded visuals for their projects while preserving the underlying mechanisms for transparency. Google is also open-sourcing a new library called Credentio, which will enable developers to embed a local validation mechanism in their own applications, further extending transparency beyond Google's platforms. It is important to note that this visible watermark removal option will not be available in countries where local laws mandate visible AI labeling, such as the EU and South Korea.

Past Controversies and Future Implications

This latest development comes after previous reports highlighted the ability of Google's Gemini 2.0 Flash model to remove watermarks from images, including those from stock media providers like Getty Images. Social media users had reported that the experimental model could not only remove watermarks but also reconstruct the underlying content. In contrast, other AI models, such as Anthropic's Claude 3.7 Sonnet and OpenAI's GPT-4o, have explicitly included restrictions on watermark removal, with Claude even describing such actions as "unethical and potentially illegal."
