Brazil Heads to Bitter Presidential Runoff as Flávio Bolsonaro Leads Lula in First Round
Right-wing Senator Flávio Bolsonaro outperformed pre-election polling to take the lead over incumbent President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva in the first round of Brazil's presidential election. Because neither candidate crossed the 50 percent threshold, both contenders now face a polarized three-week runoff on October 25. The strong showing for the Bolsonaro family coincides with substantial conservative gains across the National Congress, raising high stakes for Brazil's economic policies, environmental commitments, and foreign alliances.
